2008 is the International Year of the Potato, and this world-wide celebration is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of the potato.
A committee has been set up to coordinate the national programme of events for the Year. The members include representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Irish Potato Federation, Bord Bia, Teagasc, the Irish farmers Association, Agri Aware, and Safefood. The focus of the National Programme is to highlight and promote, at national level, awareness of the nutritional and health benefits of the potato in the Irish diet to all age groups.
As part of the celebrations, children in primary schools all over Ireland are being encouraged to grow their own potatoes through “Meet the Spuds”, in an initiative by Agri Aware in conjunction with the IYP committee and Department of Agriculture.
