What Paula Mee believes in?

“We make millions of food choices throughout our lives which have a major impact on our health and nutrition. Good food choices won’t leave us feeling unsatisfied, hungry or deprived, instead, they will make us feel in control and in charge of our lives, as well as give us energy, a strengthened immune system and a slimmer waistline.

But no one’s perfect and no one has a perfect diet all of the time. The most difficult thing about attaining perfection is finding something to do for an encore!

Remember it’s what we do most of the time that’s important. If we really try and get it right most of the time, we are doing the best we can to help our families to eat well and live well.

In Ireland today there are many of us who struggle with weight-related heart disease, diabetes and digestive disorders. In fact over half the population is overweight or obese. As a dietitian, I can’t help but feel overwhelmed at times when I look at the incidence of obesity in Irish children and the future projections.

The good news is that food that is good for us tastes good too. The problem is we have been seduced into believing that we save time and money by using fast food restaurants and takeaways, many of which are high in calories but low in nutrition. The real truth is that it’s just a matter of stocking up on foods which don’t take much preparation, but which deliver far more satisfaction in terms of appetite and keep us going for long periods of time between meals. When we eat a lot of fast foods, we get more sugar, fat and salt but very little to sustain us. We feel hungrier sooner and end up eating far too much for our size.

This website outlines simple dietary changes that can help to prolong our lives, and reduce our risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer. It is not about living an austere existence and not enjoying life. It’s about variety, balance and moderation, fundamental cornerstones of eating well. Enjoy your food and eat well.”
