Grow Your Own!

First it was her stylish fashion sense, then her toned arms, and now Michelle Obama is setting another new trend that's going to take off this summer - growing your own veg!

The Obamas are digging up the beautifully manicured White House lawns to grow their own organic vegetables, and are no doubt hoping that the trend will catch on across the United States in an effort to help people to save money whilst learning more about eating fruit and vegetables, and most importantly, eating more fresh food.

Here at home, green-fingered Trevor Sargent, Minister of Food and Horticulture was at the recent launch of the Get Growing website, which has tips on how to get the most out of your growing space, whether it is a window box, a growbag or a small flower pot!

You’ll have no excuses if your kids are involved in Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles project at school – they’ll be experts in growing vegetables by the time Summer arrives and will no doubt want to extend their knowledge and expertise to growing their own at home.

You’ll soon discover how growing vegetables is satisfying as well as healthy. And you can save yourself a fortune, too! Bags of salad leaves are expensive to buy in supermarkets and because they're washed and ready to eat, they have a short lifespan in the fridge. By growing your own, you can pick the exact quantity and combination of colours that you want. Most varieties of lettuce are foolproof and can be sown anytime between spring and summer.

Here are five of the easiest fruit and vegetables to grow at home:
